Universal Retrofit Intelligence
Make existing physical infrastructure locally intelligent instead of replacing it.
Small devices. Local intelligence. Real impact.
Most physical infrastructure already exists. Buildings, motors, cabinets, switches, meters, doors and machines do not need to be replaced just to participate in an intelligent system. A retrofit intelligence layer can add sensing, perception and bounded action at the edge.
The architecture separates simple endpoints from shared intelligence and consequence control. The objective is not to make every device expensive. It is to make the installed world addressable, observable and governable.
Three node types. One architecture.
From signal to governed action.
Only what matters needs to leave the device. The rest can happen locally.
Upgrade what already exists.
Retrofit changes the economics.
Intelligence where useful. Governance where consequential.
Edge intelligence should not mean uncontrolled autonomy. Local interpretation and local action can reduce latency, bandwidth and cloud dependence, but consequential effects still require a bounded authority path and evidence of what actually happened.
Status: concept architecture and applied research direction. Device, cost, performance and interoperability claims require hardware-specific validation.
